What to do about training & development of our leaders during a recession?

16 Mar 2009

Good leadership and management of the business are more important than ever during a recession. We need them to keep us on track, to motivate our employees, to be positive and thoughtful about changing things for the better for the future.
Employees look to their leaders to be confident and robust during difficult financial periods. They look to their leaders actions as well as their words as examples of behviour to follow.
They are looking to be given direction, skills and knowledge in order to be positively led out of a crisis – not to be pressurised and de-motivated by a negative leader who has no action plan and who acts like they have given up and cannot influence things for the better.
They are looking to their leaders for energy, enthusiasm, ideas and support – and to be encouraged to provide their own best ideas about how to take us out of the recession. Our staff do not expect us to complete dreamers, to be unrealistic and to be ignoring the business realities that face us - but they do look to us for a vision of a brighter future and some steps and actions that could move us towards it.
At times like this training and development of new skills and approaches is more rather than less important.
To optimise business growth managers must be performing at their best – investment in people is investment in the business.
It is at times like this that we are in danger of losing our best people if we do not lead and act with credibility. So please remember retention is more cost effective than recruitment!
There is a business case to be understood behind this investment in coaching, training and development – it is an opportunity and not just a cost.
Don’t stop training during times of change and business pressure – it will pay off in the long run.
