What is so important about Talent management?

17 Apr 2007

In today's fast paced Hi-Tec world, how important is it to identify and nurture the talent that exists within the people that our Organisations employ?
Many Organisations eg EMAP PLC regard this as a critical success factor for the future growth and success of their business and they are actively involved in identifying individuals with the creative and business development talent that they believe is required for their future. They are focusing both on existing employess who they currently employ as well as looking for talented individuals outside their Organisation who could be hired in future to fill a gap or to provide a new skill critical to the successful growth of the future business.
The art of predicting those critical skills for the future and of identifying people who possess them is a difficult and complex process in itself - even before you start the recruitment process aimed at attracting them into your Organisation.
The internal talent mapping and identification process itself can also produce difficulties. When you have identified your top talented people do you tell them this and exactly what do you say to them? Do you give them any special treatment and if so what kind treatment? - a higher salary, more responsibility, more scope and empowerment, more training, a longer contract, higher profile?
If you do this for your Top Talent how will they then react and respond? - positively and effectively and not by taking advantage of things you hope! But what of the other employees who have not at this stage been identified as Top Talent - what if anything do you to them? What is your response to them if they ask you why they haven't been included in this top group?
Is there a chance for them in the future to favoured in this way?
Can yo explain to them what the others have got that they haven't got - and also describe to them how they might acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in the future?
Developing the skills of the people that we currently employ is a much more cost effective and motivational strategy than continually trying to replace them witha "new model".
In summary the Top Talent identification and development process is a complicated and difficult one. Yes it may be a critical success factor for the future growth of your business but it needs handling with care and the communication surrounding it is crucial.
