What factors can derail a Manager and how can any management training help?
14 Feb 2007
These are some of the sorts of factors that can derail a manager and can interfere with their ability and that of their people to work effectively:-
• A lack of self-awareness and or awareness of others
• Not appreciating the impact of their actions on others
• Poor delegation skills and the belief that they can always do the job better than their people
• Seeing the big picture but not having an appreciation of what is happening elsewhere in the Organisation
• Not having enough time for their people
• Not communicating well enough or listening well enough
• Not providing enough support to their people at difficult times
• Not encouraging or challenging their people enough to deliver in their job role and to improve their performance
• Not monitoring performance well enough to provide the appropriate feedback or training and development to their people
• Breaking confidentiality or not acting with sensitivity or discretion
• Being rude, aggressive or over critical to their people
• Pushing people unreasonably
These are just some examples that we have come across in our work with managers in Organisations over the past 20 years. It is not an exhaustive list – nor is it a list of behaviours that any one manager exhibits! However as managers and human beings we all have our preferences and flaws and management training programmes can often help managers to do something about them.
The way that management training goes about addressing these flaws is to work with the individual managers to help them to identify and own their personal development areas and to work on an action plan to improve them – whilst still playing to their strengths. This can only happen if the manager is open minded, increases their self-awareness , knows how to improve and crucially has the desire to do so. This can often be helped by their Line manager playing their part in guiding and supporting this development.
