What elements does a business leader need to keep their eye on?

There are a myriad number of elements that any leader of an Organisation needs to keep in view and on top of if they are to fulfil their role effectively. The first group of factors are concerned with the Product or Service and competitive marketplace that the business operates in. The second set of factors concern the high level Vision, Mission and Values that underpin and define the philosophy of the Organisation and the way that it would seek to operate.
The Vision is usually a brief statement that defines the desired future state that it would like to achieve. It is often expressed in colourful, aspirational, positive language and is often somewhat out of reach. It probably isn’t visionary and stretching enough if the organisation can easily achieve it in 2 or 3 years time.
The Mission describes the basic marketplace goal and products, services, customers and stakeholders that you are aiming to operate with.
The values describe the underlying beliefs and attitudes that people in the Organisation feel to be important and to drive and support the behaviours, style and approach that they take to doing their business.
Getting clarity, agreement and commitment to these and then communicating them effectively throughout the Organisation and to its customers and stakeholders is a key responsibility of the Executive management team.
