What can you do to improve your team's development & performance?

06 Apr 2007

No two pieces of team development work are the same but there are often some basic groundrules and approaches that work effectively to help team members to get the best out of themselves and of their colleagues.
Developing and agreeing a Contract or Charter of behaviours to be adopted or avoided is a key tool.
Identifying and working on the skills of the leader and of the team members as followers is key.
Encouraging team members to be positive and "easy to do business with" helps the internal workings and external relationships of the team.external
Discussing and agreeing the Goal and common purpose for the team and of the team members is important (without this why would they work and act as a team?)
Clarifying and agreeing team roles is key.
Understanding how performance and progress will be assessed and measured is important to team memebers.
Paying attention to the environment in which the team operates and looking at the climate of the team by means of a Team Barometer questionnaire are also good techniques to use and explore.
Working on internal relationships and team dynamics is key and agreeing action plans for both individuals and for the team can help greatly in reducing tension and increasing commitment, effectiveness and performance.
So if you have a team that is working way below its optimum performance level and you would like some help to facilitate its development and performance then please contact us.
If however you have a team where the atmosphere and relationships are affected by deep disagreements between 2 or mre team members then perhaps what you need is mediation help rather than team development facilitation. There will be more written about this in my next article on wednesday 6th June.
