Using Psychometrics in Management Training

15 Jan 2007

Psychometric profiling is a means of assessing and measuring people’s personality preferences, behavioural characteristics and thinking ability that produces a picture or profile of a person typically covering the following traits:-
• Preferences
• Strengths and weaknesses
• Management and inter personal style
• Self perception and perception of others
• Current motivation
• Performance under pressure
• Thinking and decision making style
• Preferred team roles
When Psychometrics paints the picture of these individuals the question then becomes what to do with the profile and the information stored within it. Within a broader management training programme how can it be used effectively?

At Developing People Ltd (www.developingpeople.co.uk) we use Psychometrics in various stages of management training. When running Assessment and Development Centres we use various forms of psychometric questionnaires and ability tests to help individuals and organisations understand people’s potential, motivation, strengths and development needs against either their own standards of competence or external benchmarks.

Psychometrics is also a valuable tool when coaching. It helps our coaches to better understand the coachee and also generates self awareness for the coachee. The profile can be used to open discussions about why the coachee behaves in certain ways in different situations. This can then be discussed further by the coach and coachee to explore alternative ways of solving/dealing with the situation.

Management Teams also benefit from using psychometrics. Understanding the individual team members profiles will demonstrate the different or in many cases the not so different areas of strengths, motivations and skills that each team member brings. If the team members can harness the different strengths, motivations and skills of each member then the team can work towards becoming more effective and efficient. In certain situations though, entire teams will be comprised of similar or the same personality profile. This could lead to ineffective working practices, low motivation and poor performance.

Developing People help individuals, teams and organisations to get the best out of themselves and their employees. We use many techniques, models and programmes to achieve this performance. Psychometrics is just one of these tools but when used appropriately it is a very effective and powerful management training tool.
