Management Training - Know your audience to become more effective
13 Apr 2007
History has shown us that many great leaders are also great orators. One of the reasons why these leaders are good speakers is the ability to “know” their audiences; what makes their audiences tick, what motivates them and how to influence them to work towards your vision. The skill of “knowing” your audience is a powerful tool and can be used on groups of all sizes and in all types of organisations.
In today’s business climate we ask are managers to be leaders but are we equipping them with the skills to know their employees or audience? Below are just some of the skills necessary managers need to have to know their employees.
Firstly, do they know themselves; how do they perceive the world and take information in from it. By knowing yourself you can have a better understanding of how your preferences impact others and with some development you can start to understand other people’s preferences. This gives you a vital tool to modify your behaviours to suit those of your employees.
Secondly, is situational leadership embedded into your organisation? Situational leadership involves modifying your management style to suit the situation which you are currently facing. One example may be your managers may need to change their management and leadership styles to lead a team that is just forming as opposed to a team that has been working together for several years.
Thirdly, is a coaching style employed when managers are trying to teach new skills? Do they question as opposed to tell? Coaching has many advantages one of which is to allow employees to develop their own answers to their questions by the coach asking them probing questions. This provides the employee with a feeling of empowerment and tends to raise morale.
These are just a few of the skills that Developing People Ltd (www.developingpeople.co.uk) can help organisations to instil in your management teams. These skills and many others are very important for your managers and leaders to be competent in if they are going to know their employees and get the best out of them.
