Management Training – What makes a great leader?
The Developing People Leadership Puzzle.
Effective leadership is one of those areas that most businesses are striving towards but few ever reach. What is it that causes some businesses to fail while others succeed? What qualities make a great leader and how does your business promote those qualities throughout the organisation?
Leadership has always been a bit of an enigma or puzzle. Many individuals and organisations have tried to solve the riddle. Very few have succeeded in their organisation to create a programme of effective leadership that has permeated all levels of the organisation creating the climate that allows leadership to flourish and continually renew itself within an ever changing environment.
At the heart or core of all leaders we believe there are six key ingredients. These are:
Choice – An individual’s ability to choose their response, to make intelligent judgements and decisions and to take the leadership path.
Integrity – Having a conscience and sound ethics. Having clear principles and willing to stand up for them.
Will – The desire and determination to lead, succeed and learn from mistakes.
Confidence – The appropriate self awareness and display of self belief.
Influence – The ability to encourage others to follow, to lead by example as well as by persuasion.
Survivability – The resilience to keep going despite obstacles and to see things through.
These key ingredients are mainly traits and personal behaviours and are difficult to teach but can be developed over time. The key ingredients are the core but are not the full story of leadership.
Looking at past great leaders they all demonstrated the core ingredients but they also demonstrate other components which make them leaders. These components may include motivation, vision, communication and many others. Many of the great leaders demonstrate these same components but to a greater or lesser degree based upon the situation they are in, the culture of the organisation and the leader’s own strengths and weaknesses.
The organisations that continually produce and nurture leaders are those that recruit based upon the core ingredients and are always looking for opportunities to add the leadership components to their potential leaders which have been identified as competencies linked to the business’ objectives.
