Management Training – Can you just be a manager?

Management as a word developed in the 1600’s. It means the act of handling, directing or controlling a person, object and/or project. So is management enough in today’s business environment or does everyone require further skills to fulfil today’s management roles? And has today’s manager become yesterday’s supervisor?

When we think of supervisors of the past we tended to think about specific skills in specific disciplines. Supervisors needed technical expertise rather than human skills. You were promoted to supervisor when you became an expert at your role or job. Today’s supervisors on the other hand are being asked to do more and more management tasks like managing people, controlling budgets, etc.

With those responsibilities being repositioned away from traditional managers how will that impact those managers? If it is no longer solely the job of the manger to handle, direct or control people, objects and/or projects then what new skills will be necessary for managers to have so that they remain relevant to the business.

Today’s managers need to be more than just those individuals that control and handle. They require strategic thinking skills, leadership skills, problem solving skills, change management skills, performance management skills and many more.

Businesses that are not “up-skilling” their management teams in these areas will find it harder and harder to compete in today’s ever changing environment. Their managers will not be equipped to provide the best service and products to your customers and staff. Businesses in this category will receive less and less value for money from their managers as time goes on and will inevitably lose market value as well.
