Management Training- why is it important to ensure that the Appraisal process includes training and development objectives as well as organizational, team or personal objectives?
10 Jan 2007
One of key responsibilities of being an effective leader and manager is having the ability to motivate your staff, being able to help them to achieve optimum levels of performance and to fulfil their career aspirations.
When used effectively, one of the management tools which can help you with this is the Appraisal process. In essence the Appraisal Process should include looking back i.e. by reviewing achievements during the appraisal period and then looking forward i.e. by discussing and agreeing objectives (organisational, team and personal) for the coming months. Additionally it is vitally important to include time to discuss the individual’s training and development needs as recent research suggests that having a meaningful personal development plan is critical when employees are considering their future within an organisation.
Research for Investors in People (IIP) shows that nearly half of employees (48%) feel they deserve to be promoted within six months, but 60% feel they will have to switch organisations to progress their career.
Over half (53%) of employees questioned said that their organisation’s approach to promotion remains a mystery, and more than three quarters (77%) were unsure of how development in their role was linked to promotion prospects.
When asked how their bosses could improve the process for promoting people, employees called for clear guidelines for staff at all levels (57%). Over half (54%) cited individual development plans and 47% pointed to a robust appraisals process as important factors.
Some other key points to consider:
• Succession planning and talent management should be a critical part of the company strategy.
• The organisation may stagnate if individuals are not encouraged or supported to develop and learn.
• Individuals are not always looking for promotion, sometimes it is about feeling more valued or more challenged by being given, and trusted with, new responsibilities.
• Without new challenges ambitious individuals are likely to seek progression with another company.
• Recruiting replacements is time consuming and costly to the busy.
• Your competitors will welcome the opportunity to head-hunt your best people.
