How do you get prepared to deliver a new Leadership training module?

What are the key things that you have to consider as a trainer, when you are preparing to deliver a new training module to a management audience for the first time?
Understanding the purpose and business objectives for the Organisation and for the participants is a key starting point. These business objectives need to be translated into learning objectives for the participants and then related to the content sessions that you plan to deliver to the participants.
You need to draw up a training programme as a guide for both you, any other trainers and the participants. This also needs to be reviewed by the Organisation sponsor for the training to ensure that it meets their business objectives and addresses the areas that they are expecting it to. The training programme and plan needs to cover both the content, approach and timing for the sessions and to act as a "road map" for the trainers. Careful thought as to the style of delivery e g plenary presentations, syndicate work, question and answers, case studies, scenarios and group sizes will all need to considered here, before the design can be completed.
The best locationa and environment to meet the needs of the programme should be considered as well as all of the environmental factors such as, safety, food, refreshments and breaks.
Room layout and the use of any presentation technology, equipment, handouts, visual aids needs to be thought through.
As well as planning for your inputs you also need to think about the needs of the participants. What pre-course work, reading or questionnaires do they need to complete? What communication and joining instructions do you need to send out to them? Do they have any special requirements relating to their learning ability, learning styles or helath or dietary requirements that need to be considered.
What other information or approach do you need to make the training relevant to their business and reality - do you need materials and work examples from the business - do you need a sponsor from the organisation to attend and what role would they have in doing this?
When it comes to the day you need to have all of your materials prepared and ready to go and any handouts, course binders and reading materials copied and ready for the participants.
Finally before you set off on your trainer's journey you need to be calm, rested and open minded to deal with whatever comes your way and have your evaluation and feedback mechanisms in place and ready to use in the next key stage which is to assess the relevance, value and impact of your training module.
