How can a management training course help a person to address any management flaws?
23 Jan 2008
In my last article I identified the sorts of factors that can interfere with a manager’s ability to motivate, lead and manage their people and business effectively. In this article I plan to examine how well management training programmes can help participants to address their flaws and to indicate what else needs to be going on to support this learning and development process.
The first area to look at is the aims and objectives of the training course itself – what is the focus and content of the programme and what are the intended learning outcomes.
Do they potentially address individual participant’s needs or is there one or more central themes that the course expects the managers to learn on the programme?
Is the programme structured and presented in such a way that individuals are given the opportunity to reflect on their own individual circumstances and needs?
Is their any data available that relates to individual’s styles and approaches that will be useful for them to increase their understanding of their own unique style and situation and that would increase their self-awareness of their potential flaws?
Is it presented in a sensitive and confidential way?
Are the trainers able and prepared to act as facilitators of small groups and to help bring out individual differences and needs in a sensitive and effective way?
Is each individual encouraged to build a personal action plan and given any ideas and options about how to address their needs?
If most of these conditions are fulfilled then a management training course can indeed help a person to address their management flaws, providing of course that they are willing and motivated to do so!
Other activities outside of training courses that can help this learning process are:-
• 18/360 feedback instruments
• Psychometric profiles
• Clear feedback and direction from their manager
• Coaching support
• Guided reading
