Do Directors still need management training?

04 Dec 2006

The most appropriate response to this is to change the questions emphasis to read slightly differently i.e. would they BENEFIT from receiving ongoing management training. The answer to this question is undoubtedly yes for the following reasons.

1. They should be keeping abreast of their responsibility as a Director to run the business with probity and to fulfill their obligations as a Company Director to their stakeholders. The Institute of Directors runs various courses leading to specific accreditation for Directors.

2. They are usually still involved in managing parts of the business and for at least some staff and keeping up to date and effective in these areas and of course in Leadership and direction is key.

3. It sets a good example to other managers in the Organisation to see that their Directors are investing time and money in their own continuing professional development.

Finally and in conclusion there are always aspects of being an effective manager or Director that can be enhanced by management training and the impact and value of Directors making and implementing the right decisions in the right way can have a significant benefit on the whole business.
