Cross Cultural Management Training

23 Oct 2006

Today, more than ever, management teams and project teams are working across boundaries, borders and cultures. Where as cross cultural teams used to be solely the territory of large international organisations many small to medium sized organisations (SME’s) are now finding themselves working in this environment as well. This cross cultural environment can take several forms including having different cultures, races or religions working on the same team in the same office, teams from different offices in different countries working on the same project or in some circumstance you may have both of these situations present.

So how do organisations cope with working in this multi-cultural environment? Developing People Ltd has developed cross cultural management training programmes for all sizes and type of organisation. Two of the several different types of training developed are awareness and project specific.

Cross cultural awareness training has a number of applications. Its main objective is to introduce, analyse and constructively tackle the different manifestations of culture in the workplace. It essentially deals with interpersonal interaction. For example, cross cultural team building training will aim to raise team members' awareness of each other culturally in order to foster mutual trust, respect and understanding, Cross cultural management training aims to equip management staff with the knowledge and skills to effectively supervise a multi-cultural staff. One of the results of which will be clearer lines of communication. Cross cultural awareness training also results in a more convivial and understanding work environment.

Project specific training programmes are generally aimed at individuals or teams that regularly visit a foreign country or who frequently interact with overseas clients or colleagues. This training programme is also primarily used to bring teams from different cultures together who are working on the same or similar projects. Such training looks at one specific culture/country and covers areas such as values, behaviours, ethics, business practices, etiquette, protocol or negotiation styles. The aim of such training is to better equip participants with the key skills that will help in building successful business relationships.
