You Can’t Coach a Number of People in the Same Team
Because of confidentiality conflicting aims and objectives, subjectivity
Why not if a team is a group of individuals working together to achieve the same or an agreed objective?
Potential issues
Confidentiality
Competition and competitiveness
Message passing
Over identity with an individual team member
Confusion about different team members perceptions
The alternatives – only one or some people receive coaching in the team. A number of team members receive coaching but from different coaches. I coach only one member per team and the others are left to their own devices.
The Benefits
Understanding the broader context and perspective
Helping to bring team members together
Spotting opportunities for support and collaboration
Providing a different objective and perspective
The opportunity to check out different perceptions and responses
The Drawbacks
Keeping track of different parties goals and objectives
Remaining objective
Maintaining confidentiality
In conclusion it is possible to coach more than one person from the same team - but extra care needs to be taken with confidentiality and boundaries. It is advisable for more than one coach to be used when coaching a larger number of people from the same team.
